Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bi-Lateral Extradition Agreements.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

39 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of countries with which Ireland has concluded bi-lateral extradition agreements; if he has any plans to introduce new agreements; if he has satisfied himself that extradition procedures between Ireland and West Germany are adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland has concluded bi-lateral extradition agreements with the United States of America and Australia. No new bi-lateral agreements are being planned.

Extradition arrangements between Ireland and the Federal Republic of Germany operate in accordance with the European Convention on Extradition and the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism to which both countries are parties. I am satisfied that these Conventions meet the extradition obligations of the State. Proposals for the setting up of a joint working group of senior officials to see what improvements might be made in the practical arrangements for extradition between our two countries have been made to the German authorities.
