Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fire Safety Regulations.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

52 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the organisation which is responsible for the enforcement of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order, 1988; the number of persons involved; the number of inspections which have taken place since the introduction of the order; if these inspections are carried out on an organised basis or on the basis of complaints made by members of the public; the number of prosecutions which have taken place; and if his attention has been drawn to the feeling among genuine furniture manufacturers that the regulations are being ignored by a substantial number of back street furniture manufacturers who are gaining an unfair advantage.

The Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade is responsible for the enforcement of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order, 1988.

The additional data sought by the Deputy relates to the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade, who is independent in the exercise of his functions.
