Ceist:

242 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if there are faculties for any of the following languages in Irish Universities (i) Chinese, (ii) Japanese and (iii) Arabic; if so, if she will outline the details; and, if not, the plans there are to provide such facilities.

The information sought by the Deputy is contained in the following table:

University College Dublin Faculty of Arts

Trinity College Dublin Faculty of Arts (Letters)

Dublin City University School of Applied Languages and Dublin Business School

University of Limerick College of Business

B.A. Degree — Arabic may be taken in each year to degree level.

Extra Mural evening classes are provided as follows:— Introduction to Chinese Language & Culture Introduction to Japanese Language & Culture.

B.A. in International Marketing and Languages— Optional course in Japanese.

B.B.S. degree (Business Studies and a Modern Language) Japanese is available as an option.

Trinity College is considering the introduction of a degree programme in Arabic in the future.
