Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

56 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if his undertaking to Dáil Éireann that toxic waste would not be imported into this country still stands, in view of recent reports that such waste would be sent from Northern Ireland for disposal in the proposed national toxic waste disposal incinerator.

It was made quite clear to the groups which were invited to submit detailed proposals for the provision of hazardous waste treatment and disposal facility that I would not favour a proposal involving disposal of wastes other than those arising in Ireland.

Any question of acceptance for treatment or disposal wastes originating in Northern Ireland would be a matter for agreement between the two administrations. There are no proposals in this regard at the present time.
