Vol. 401 No. 5

Written Answers. - Primary Education for Travelling Community Children.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

101 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the percentage of children of the travelling community which is receiving primary education; if she is satisfied with the present situation; the measures she intends to take to bring about substantial improvements; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Figures available to my Department indicate that 90 per cent approximately of traveller children of primary schoolgoing age are availing of primary education.

Efforts are constantly being made to raise still further the present participation levels through the work of the special visiting teacher service for traveller children and of the national co-ordinator for travellers employed by the National Council for Travelling People whose salary and expenses are grant-aided by my Department.
