Vol. 401 No. 5

Written Answers. - Junior Hospital Doctors Working Hours.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

20 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health whether all health board hospitals are now operating a 65 hour working week limit for junior hospital doctors; the extra financial resources required to achieve this limit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The 65 hour average rostered week for non-consultant hospital doctors is operating in all health board areas. In circumstances where a doctor is required to work more than this average, he/she receives payment at half the normal hourly rate of pay in accordance with rosters agreed between local management and the non-consultant hospital doctors. The introduction of a 65 hour average rostered week had a total cost of £5.1 million.
