Ceist:20 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Defence when land will be acquired to provide a separate and independent training unit for Naval recruits at Haulbowline, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The acquisition of 15 acres of reclaimed foreshore at Ringaskiddy, County Cork for Naval Service training purposes is at present being arranged between my Department and the Department of the Marine. It is expected that the arrangements will be finalised at an early date.
Once the land has been acquired, are the resources or plans there to get on with the reconstruction of the training school?
Yes, that is going to get priority. That is why we are seeking to finalise this arrangement with the Department of the Marine for the transfer of the site. We appreciate there is an urgent need for the provision of the facilities referred to by the Deputy and we will get on to it straightaway.
The Minister has indicated that gymnasium facilities will be provided in the school once constructed. Can he indicate the time-scale involved and whether all personnel at Haulbowline would have access to those facilities in view of the dilapidated conditions there?
There will be provision in the coming Estimate for facilities at Haulbowline. Of course, over a period of years the full facilities envisaged will be provided on a staged basis. That is the whole purpose of acquiring these 15 acres.
Perhaps, Sir, you will allow me a certain licence as we are talking about Haulbowline. When will the promised facilities finally be arranged for me to take a trip on one of the vessels?
Does the Deputy want to do a comparison test?
Will it be before 7 November?
We will get the Deputy on a boat as well.
