Vol. 402 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

63 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health the number of Downs Syndrome men and women in Ireland over the age of 18 years; the number that are (a) in residential units (b) in training units and (c) awaiting entry into both residential and training units; and if he intends to resolve the long-running dispute with Cheeverstown House, Dublin 14 this year.

Statistical information collected by my Department on mental handicap services does not differentiate between people with Downs Syndrome and other people with mental handicap. Existing statistics provide information on client's dependency, age and sex.

As regards Cheeverstown House, I am anxious that current difficulties there will be resolved this year and I am hopeful that they will be.
