Vol. 402 No. 4

Written Answers. - World Climate Conference.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

43 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the position which has been agreed by the EC Council of Energy and Environment Ministers concerning greenhouse gas emissions, in advance of the Second World Climate Conference; if he is attending the conference; and the targets which have been set by the Irish Government for energy conservation and for reductions in the emission of greenhouse gases.

At the Joint Council of Energy and Environment Ministers on 29 October 1990 the council agreed to the following: a common approach on the question of global warming; response strategies for the Community; and an agreed Community position for the Second World Climate Conference.

It is the intention that Ireland will be represented at ministerial level at the Second World Climate Conference.

In line with the Bergen Ministerial Declaration of May 1990 and the Community arrangements indicated above a national strategy, which will include conservation and other measures, is being developed for greenhouse gas emissions.
