Vol. 402 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

208 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the steps she proposes to take to provide school transport for a person (details supplied) in County Waterford, who suffers from Down's Syndrome, so that he can attend St. Martin's School for the moderately handicapped, Waterford, bearing in mind that he will be six years old in December and cannot avail of suitable education; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

No application has been made to the school for enrolment of this child.

The Department provide transport facilities for children attending special schools where this can be done within reasonable cost limits.

The residence of the child in question is remote from the route of the special transport service to St. Martin's School, the actual distance being 16 miles.

Should he enrol in St. Martin's School, a grant towards private transport arrangements would be offered to the family.
