Vol. 402 No. 8

Written Answers - Register of Elections.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

91 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the number of errors and omissions in the Register of Elections; and the action he proposes to take to ensure that as far as possible, the register is kept up to date.

John Browne

Ceist:

104 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for the Environment if in relation to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 45 of 28 February, 1990, he will outline the progress which has been made in allowing a county registrar the right to grant a vote, up to the day of the election, to people who have voted for up to 50 years and who have been left off the voting register through a printing error.

I propose to take Question Nos. 91 and 104 together.

I am aware that despite continuing efforts by registration authorities to achieve greater accuracy in the preparation of the register of electors, errors continue to occur. I have given consideration to effecting improvements in the registration process with a view to ensuring that as far as possible nobody will be deprived of a vote by the occurrence of such errors. Certain changes in the law to improve the procedures in relation to the preparation of the register will be provided for in an Electoral Bill currently being drafted.
