Vol. 402 No. 9

Written Answers. - Forestry Programme.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

19 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Energy if he will give a progress report on the success to date in the forestry area of the targets set in the National Development Plan under the following headings: (1) afforestation (2) improvement of woodland (3) reconstitution of woodland (4) forest roads (5) forest harvesting and (6) back-up such as pilot projects and studies.

Most of the information requested is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

As can be seen from the figures in the tabular statement, progress on afforestation is on schedule while that on reconstitution of woodlands and construction of forest roads is well ahead of target.

No applications for grant-aid have, as yet, been received under the improvement of woodland measure, a new scheme launched last August.

Grants are now available under the forest harvesting measure though none have yet been paid. There has been a very good response to the scheme and I expect that the grant-aid target for this year will be achieved.
