Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Wind Energy Development.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

140 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline his policy in relation to wind energy development in Ireland; and the progress achieved to date in this area.

I will encourage wind energy development which is technologically and financially viable and, with this in view, I have invited the submission by 30 November 1990 of proposals for Ireland's first windfarm. Earlier wind energy attempts in Ireland have been, for the most part, disappointing. I am hopeful, however, that recent improvements in design and performance of wind energy equipment will lead to better results, as renewable sources of energy that are practical and competitive can play an important role in both our energy and environmental strategies.
