So far as the criminal legal aid scheme is concerned, the latest figures available are those for the year ending 31 December 1989. The fees paid to solicitors and barristers under the scheme are set out in the tables below.
Under the scheme for civil legal aid solicitors providing services are employed directly by the Legal Aid Board and are not paid fees. Payments made to barristers under the scheme during the period 1 September 1989 to 31 August 1990 are also set out in the tables below.
The amounts shown in respect of criminal legal aid are the figures before deduction of retention tax but they do not include payments in respect of value-added tax, travelling, subsistence and other disbursements. In the case of payments by the board under the civil legal aid scheme the amounts include retention tax, but also include payments in respect of value-added tax, travelling and subsistence.
