Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Television Signals.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

167 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Communications the reason it is not possible to upgrade and legalise the existing deflection system for the retransmission of television signals; if he has satisfied himself that this is the present position; and if he will take steps to rectify the matter.

This matter has come up a number of times over the years. The basic problem is that we do not have sufficient UHF broadcasting spectrum available to us under the relevant international treaties to enable a satisfactory choice of channels to be made available on a countrywide basis and cater for national or regional broadcasting developments which may occur. I refer the Deputy, in particular, to Question No. 65 on 18 May 1988, columns 1791 and 1792, volume 380, Official Report, No. 8, for that day.
