Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin 15 Area Second-Level Education Facilities.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

211 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education when approval will be given for a non-fee paying second level school to cover the parishes of Laurel Lodge, Carpenterstown and Castleknock, Dublin 15; if her attention has been drawn to the strong growth in the primary school population and the ongoing rapid housing development in the area; if, in the circumstances, she is in a position to give the projected number of second level pupils for the area for the academic year 1991-92 and each of the subsequent five years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

224 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education the plans she has for the provision of a post-primary school in the Carpenterstown/Laurel Lodge/ Castleknock area, Dublin 15, in view of the huge growth in the schoolgoing population in the primary schools of St. Brigid's and St. Thomas the Apostle.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 211 and 224 together.

The decision to defer the provision of a post-primary school for the Castleknock/Laurel Lodge/Carpenterstown area was taken in 1987 because of the significant number of surplus pupil places in post-primary schools in the surrounding areas.

The number of pupils, which it is anticipated, will be leaving primary schools in Castleknock/Laurel Lodge/Carpenterstown in each year up to 1996 is as follows:

Year

1991

1992

1993

1994

1995

1996

Number of pupils

178

168

198

209

216

198

My Department is aware of the ongoing housing developments in this area and consequently a review of the post-primary accommodation situation is carried out annually to ensure that all pupils who will be seeking places can be catered for. The available accommodation is considered adequate for currently projected needs.
