Vol. 403 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Bill Cotter, the need for an urgent review of the higher education grant scheme; (2) Deputy Charles Flanagan, the urgent need to provide adequate national primary public lighting in the village of Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois; (3) Deputy John Connor, the illegal export of a Bronze Age gold collar from this country and its appearance for apparent valuation and sale at a leading London fine art auction room; (4) Deputy Richard Bruton, the issue of future funding of community radio in Dublin; (5) Deputy Roger Garland, the serious concern about the recent report that FEOGA grants worth over £1 million payable by EC were lost because of bureaucratic delays in the Department of the Marine over licence applications; (6) Deputy Gerry O'Sullivan, the serious local authority housing situation which exists in the city of Cork; (7) Deputy Tom Enright, the provision of moneys from his Department to provide an adequate lighting system in Borris-in-Ossory village in County Laois in view of the fact that there have been two fatal accidents in the past ten days and there have been quite a number of people injured because of bad lighting; (8) Deputy Séamus Pattison, the urgent need to proceed with the development of St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny; (9) Deputy Jim O'Keeffe, the circumstances surrounding the attempted suicide of a 16 year old prisoner yesterday and his proposals for reducing the incidence of such occurrences in the future; (10) Deputy Eric Byrne, the practice of the Department of Social Welfare in substantially reducing the unemployment assistance of single persons living at home on the basis that they are receiving board and lodging from their families and the pressure this is exerting on young people to leave the family home and in some cases emigrate and (11) Deputy Pat McCartan, the need to establish a secure therapeutic unit for young offenders to avoid courts having to sentence juveniles to adult prisons.

I wish to advise the House that I have selected for discussion on the Adjournment matters raised by the following Deputies: Deputy Jim O'Keeffe, Deputy Pat McCartan and Deputy Séamus Pattison.
