Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Training Programmes.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

62 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice if he has plans to introduce training programmes for members of the Garda Síochána to assist members of the force in dealing with domestic and marital disputes where the Garda are called in.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that research is under way at the Garda College, Templemore, with a view to developing a new training programme to meet the needs of members of the force who are required to intervene in domestic and marital disputes. The new programme will be designed to concentrate on imparting the necessary interpersonal and communications skills appropriate in dealing with such disputes and will build on training of this kind which is already being provided as part of the general training provided for trainee gardaí and in the various in-service training courses.
