The detailed administrative arrangements for the issue of driving licences are primarily a matter for the licensing authority concerned.
The Euro model driving licence introduced on 13 November 1989 incorporates security features which increased the processing time for each licence. Dublin Corporation envisage that the backlog of applications for licences will be eliminated by the end of next month as a result of the filling of vacant posts, the redeployment of staff and overtime work.
The position will be further improved early in 1991 as the administrative benefits of the new ten year licence begin to take effect and the volume of annual licence applications is significantly reduced.
Arrangements are also being made to speed up the processing of individual driving licence applications by computerisation.
