Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Export of Horses for Slaughter.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

141 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the steps he has taken to prevent the export of live horses for slaughter; if he has had any discussions with factory owners here with a view to having them become involved in the slaughtering of these animals.

The export of horses to countries other than the UK, USA and Canada is prohibited except under licence from my Department. Licences are not issued for horses intended for slaughter.

A registered horse abattoir has, following major refurbishment, reopened and is licensed for intra-Community trade.
