Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Moneylending as Curriculum Subject.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

69 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education if, in relation to the statement of the Minister for Social Welfare of 21 November 1988 on an Action Plan on Moneylending, she will outline the actions undertaken by her in relation to her area of responsibility as regards moneylending; and if she will further outline initiatives which are proposed in relation to money management and moneylending.

The importance of savings is emphasised as part of the primary curriculum in civics. The establishment of savings groups is suggested as one of the ways to adopt a practical approach to this issue.

In the context of the general review of the primary curriculum, the need for a general awareness of the problems associated with moneylending will be taken into account.

In the post-primary sector such topics as budgets, methods of saving, personal income, financial services for the individual and other related matters feature prominently in such subject areas as mathematics, commerce, home economics and civics.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment will be asked to have regard to the Action Plan on Moneylending in a review of the civics syllabus which it is currently undertaking.
