197 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the number of pupils repeating the leaving certificate course for the year 1990-91; the number who repeated in 1988-89 and 1989-90; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
In the 1988-89 school year, a total of 7,128 pupils who had sat the leaving certificate examination were enrolled to repeat the final year of the leaving certificate course in post-primary schools recognised by my Department. The corresponding figure for the 1989-90 school year was 7,332.
The figure for the 1990-91 school year is not available yet but it is not expected to vary significantly from those of previous years.
