Ceist:

120 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Labour the number of work permits applied for in 1990 to date from the most recent figures available; the number of work permits approved and refused; and the nationality of applicants which arose most frequently.

In the period January to October 1990, the latest date for which statistics are available, a total of 2,991 work permits was issued. Of these, 1,923 were new permits and 1,068 were renewals.

In the same period 217 work permit applications were refused. The main reason for refusal was that the employer making the application had been unable to satisfy my Department that suitably qualified Irish/EC nationals were not available to fill the vacancy on offer.

Statistics regarding nationality are recorded only in respect of work permits actually granted. The principal nationalities of persons for whom work permits were granted during the period in question are as follows:
