Vol. 404 No. 1

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before proceeding to the Order of Business I have notice from Deputy Pat Rabbitte that he seeks leave to move a motion under Standing Order 30. I understand that Deputy McCartan has been deputised to put the question in the unavoidable absence of Deputy Rabbitte.

Thank you, a Cheann Comhairle, for facilitating me in this way. In accordance with Standing Order 30 I seek to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest, namely, that Dáil Éireann expresses its serious concern at the reported leaking on Thursday last of inflation figures produced by the Central Statistics Office in advance of their official publication time to certain financial interests in such a way as to allow them to make a speculative killing on the financial markets; calls on the Taoiseach to carry out the fullest possible investigation into the incident and to report back to the Dáil at the earliest possible date; and, in view of the damage that this incident could do to our international reputation, calls on the Taoiseach to ensure that steps are taken to prevent such leaks from occurring in the future. In view of the seriousness of the matter I would ask the House and you, a Cheann Comhairle, to accede to the request.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it is one contemplated by Standing Order No. 30 and I cannot therefore grant leave to move the motion.

In accepting your ruling may I, in that event raise this matter on the Adjournment?

There is a procedure for dealing with that matter, Deputy, and my office will be pleased to facilitate you if that is possible.
