Vol. 404 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gallery of Contemporary Art.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

3 Mr. McCartan asked the Taoiseach the number of posts to be filled or already filled at the Gallery of Contemporary Art, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, since the appointment of the director; and if he will make a statement confirming the usual practice of public advertisement of such posts.

No posts have been filled at the Museum of Modern Art since the appointment of the director. The number of posts to be filled has not yet been determined. I have been informed by the board that all posts will, in accordance with normal public service practice, be advertised.

This again, is a worthwhile project expected to come onstream during the year of culture. Can the Taoiseach indicate the expected date of opening? Would he accept that it seems to be very late in the day now to begin to fill positions? Can he indicate what the staff complement will be for the gallery or museum, once opened?

I have just got a submission, which has recently arrived from the board, about staffing which has not yet been considered. It covers curatorial and security personnel. I will let the Deputy have information about it in due course.

Can the Taoiseach indicate whether the future funding of the gallery will be covered by lottery through the Arts Council or by way of direct vote to the board of the gallery?

It will almost certainly be mainly from the lottery. It may not be through the Arts Council——

But the source will be through the lottery?
