Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Blackrock, Dublin, School.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

386 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she will outline, in respect of Blackrock Convent national school, the total number of pupils as submitted by the school in the current school year; the total number of teachers in the school; and the reason the resultant pupil-teacher ratio for the school is different from that given in her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 186 on 13 November 1990.

There were 297 pupils enrolled in Blackrock Convent national school on 30 September 1990.

The teaching staff of the school is comprised of a principal, nine assistants and a remedial teacher.

The pupil-teacher ratio differs from that given in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 186 on 13 November 1990 because the staffing of the school was taken as principal plus ten assistants plus a remedial, a total of 12. The post of tenth assistant had been approved on the 28 June 1990 as the school qualified for an additional appointment as a developing school under the terms of Circular 8/90. This appointment was subject to a minimum enrolment of 330 being achieved when the tenth assistant took up duty. This minimum enrolment was not achieved, therefore the staffing of the school remained at principal plus nine assistants plus remedial.
