Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - State-owned Companies' Pension Funds.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

124 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an assurance that in the case of shares being sold in a State-owned company any shortfall in the pension fund will be addressed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While the solvency of the pension funds of the commercial State-owned companies is primarily a matter for the companies and the trustees of the funds, I would agree that any problem in this area would have to be addressed in the context of a sale of the State interest. Indeed, any prospective purchaser would be likely to insist on this aspect of a company's affairs being in a satisfactory state before reaching agreement on the sale.
