Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Old Pier, Dún Laoghaire.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

95 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine the reason a dockside granite walled open latrine at the head of the Old Pier, Dún Laoghaire Harbour, County Dublin, has been dismantled; the purpose for which the stones are intended; and his views on whether the removal of this feature diminishes the harbour heritage.

This structure was a late 19th century open urinal which discharged directly into the harbour and which had become an unauthorised collection point for discarded rubbish of an unsavory nature. The structure was removed in the interests of the health and safety of the users of the pier and of my Department's own staff.

The salvaged stone is to be used for restoration of the lower deck of the East Pier which is currently under way.

I am very concerned about maintaining the heritage of Dún Laoghaire Harbour and will continue to monitor the prerequisites for the use and enjoyment of the harbour's facilities.
