Ceist:39 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance the estimated figure for unemployment for 1991 on which the estimate for the Department of Social Welfare is based; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The 1991 Estimate for the Department of Social Welfare, as published on 26 January in the White Paper "Estimates of Receipts and Expenditure for the Year ending 31 December, 1991", is based on an average live register total of 228,000 persons.
This figure took account of the latest assessments of the international economic outlook, which became available after the 1991 Estimates for Public Services — Abridged Version — were prepared late last year, trends in the live register to the end of 1990, and Irish economic and employment prospects for the year ahead.
