Vol. 405 No. 3

Written Answers. - Death of Swans.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

112 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the problem of the wholesale slaughter of swans in Mulroy Bay, County Donegal, apparently as a result of copper poisoning; the action he intends to take in this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that a large number of swans have died recently in Mulroy Bay, County Donegal. Post-mortems have been carried out for the Wildlife Service of the Office of Public Works on some of the swans. The results were not conclusive. Levels of copper were found in the livers of the swans which seem very high.

The Wildlife Service have asked the Departments of the Marine and the Environment and Donegal County Council to carry out further investigations to ascertain the source of the copper. The Wildlife Service will continue to seek to establish the definite cause of death.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

113 Mr. Creed asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of the press briefing facilities installed in the new Government Buildings such as design, capacity and communication facilities.

The Government Press Centre, which has seating accommodation for 80 people, have the usual facilities provided in such centres.

The press work area which is adjacent to the Press Centre will provide space for journalists to prepare their work, with phones and communications facilities.

Accommodation has also been provided for television interviews.
