Ceist:57 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) that meat exports to Iran and Libya are about to recommence; if he will give any estimate of the likely level of such exports in the current year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 36 and 57 together.
Following extensive consultations with the Egyptian authorities last year the way was cleared for the export of beef from Ireland and a shipment was made a few weeks ago. Future shipments will depend on Egypt's import requirements. The question of cattle exports is being pursued.
In relation to Iran and Libya, there have been extensive consultations at ministerial and other levels. Discussions are well advanced at technical level. When these are completed the timing and level of trade will be a commercial matter.
The development of trade with Far Eastern countries is limited by the absence of Community export refunds.
