Vol. 405 No. 8

Written Answers. - Teaching of Irish.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

60 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Education if consideration has been given to implementing an lárchanúint don Ghaeilge in the teaching of Irish, at both primary and second levels, in view of the many advantages which such a scheme would have; and if she will outline her Department's policy on the matter.

A representative group under the auspices of Bord na Gaeilge, the relevant statutory body for Irish, are examining the question of promoting the use of a standardised version of spoken Irish in education, in the media and in society in general. I am awaiting recommendations from this group to inform my policy in regard to the use of an lárchanúint don Ghaeilge in the teaching of Irish at both primary and post-primary levels.
