Vol. 405 No. 9

Written Answers. - Civilian Casualties in Gulf.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

49 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the initiatives the Irish Government are taking to ascertain the extent of civilian injuries and deaths in Iraq and Kuwait.

The number of civilian dead and injured in Iraq and Kuwait can only be accurately established by the Governments of those two countries. The extent of civilian injuries is also being examined by, among others, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, as part of their assessment of humanitarian needs in the post-war situation. The Government do not consider that they could usefully contribute to these efforts in current circumstances.
