Vol. 406 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Firearms Training.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

34 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice the changes which are being planned in regard to firearms training for members of the Garda, in the light of the internal Garda investigations into recent incidents in which Garda firearms were discharged leading to the deaths of a number of suspects and the wounding of several more; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The internal Garda report on firearms training in the Garda Síochána makes a number of recommendations in relation to future firearms training, tactical training and equipping of members of the force who are required to carry firearms. The report's findings have the approval of the Commissioner and also my full support. These findings include recommendations for the provision of improved firearms training facilities, for the appointment of additional firearms instructors, for raising the general standard of proficiency, for the provision of more extensive and more frequent firearms courses, including refresher courses, and for greater emphasis on tactical training.

Most of the changes recommended in the report are already being implemented and the remainder will be put in place as soon as possible. The director of the Garda college has been given responsibility for implementation of the report.
