Vol. 406 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

57 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a decision will be made on the appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Cork against the decision to refuse his old age pension application.

The person concerned made a claim for old age non-contributory pension on 8 May 1990. Following investigation his claim was disallowed on the basis that his means exceeded the statutory limit. He appealed this decision on 6 December 1990 and his case was sent to a social welfare officer for further investigation. These investigations are still under way. When they are completed the appeal will be dealt with as quickly as possible by the independent social welfare appeals office.

Ceist:

58 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a lone parent's allowance will be awarded to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

A lone parent allowance at the rate of £66.50 per week has been awarded to the person concerned with effect from 29 November 1990. This is the maximum rate of allowance payable to a person with one dependent child. In addition, a free fuel allowance of £5.00 per week has been awarded with effect from the same date.

Arrangements have been made to issue a payment book containing payable orders from 14 March 1991 to her local post office.

Arrears of lone parent's allowance covering the period from 29 November 1990 to 13 March 1991, less supplementary welfare allowance paid to her during this period, will be issued to the person concerned shortly.

Ceist:

59 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare when payment of arrears of pension will be made to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The parliamentary question is the first notification which was received by my Department concerning the death of this pensioner.

The deceased pensioner's payable order book has now been recalled. As soon as this is received, the arrears of pension due to her next-of-kin will be determined.

Ceist:

60 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a living alone allowance has been withdrawn from a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

In order to qualify for a living alone allowance, a person must satisfy certain conditions, one of which requires that the applicant must be living alone.

The person's daughter now resides with the person concerned and the living alone allowance is no longer payable. The daughter is also receiving an allowance from my Department.
