Vol. 406 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grants for Historical Buildings.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

79 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the grants or assistance which are available to local authorities or private individuals for the upkeep and maintenance of buildings which are listed as being of historical or cultural significance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No such grants are available from my Department. However, under section 14 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, a planning authority may provide assistance to a body or person concerned in the preservation of buildings of artistic, architectural, archaeological, geological or historical interest.

Assistance of the kind referred to is also available through the taxation system for which the Minister for Finance is responsible and from the National Heritage Council which operates under the aegis of the Department of the Taoiseach.
