Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

35 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline his recruitment policy for the Defence Forces for 1991.

During 1991 it is proposed to enlist 54 apprentices in the Army Apprentice School, 50 apprentices in the Air Corps Apprentice School and about 20 direct entry technicians in the Naval Service. It is also expected that cadetship competitions will be held later this year but it is not possible at this stage to say how many cadetships will be available. In addition it is envisaged that a limited number of appointments will be made as specialist officers such as engineers and medical officers. The question of general service recruitment is being kept under review in the light of operational requirements and the overall budgetary situation.
