Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Air Pollution by Motor Vehicles.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

90 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the tax incentives available to Irish citizens for the purchase of new vehicles which meet the anti-pollution measures adopted by the EC in June 1989; if he will further outline incentives which now apply within all EC member states; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no tax incentives for the purchase of these vehicles in the State.

I understand that, under EC rules to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles, cars under 1,400 ccs must comply with certain emission standards by end-1992; generally speaking, compliance will require that they be fitted with catalytic convertors. Similar requirements have yet to be formally adopted for larger cars.

In the circumstances, I do not consider it is necessary, or appropriate, to aid the purchase of such vehicles by way of tax incentives.

I have no information on tax incentives for the purchase of such vehicles in other member states.
