Vol. 407 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Employment Schemes.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

17 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons engaged on temporary employment schemes as at 21 April 1991; and if he will give details of these schemes.

The number of persons engaged on the temporary employment schemes operated by FÁS on 29 March 1991, the latest date for which information is available, was 14,376. The breakdown is as follows:

Social Employment Scheme, 11,510; Teamwork, 790; Employment Incentive Scheme, 1,043; Enterprise Scheme, 1,033.

Details of the schemes are as follows:

The social employment scheme is designed to help the long term unemployed in the over 25 age group.

Teamwork is for those under 25 and on the live register.

The employment incentive scheme is designed to encourage employers by the payment of grants to increase their work-forces by recruiting disadvantged persons.

The enterprise scheme, which is intended to encourage unemployed people to set up their own business, is part FÁS's integrated enterprise programme which also involves a business appraisal training programme, and the community enterprise programme. The eligibity conditions specify that participants must be persons who are in receipt of unemployment assistance or unemployment benefit for not less than 13 weeks (part of this time can involve receipt to disability benefit or participation on a training course) prior to participation in the scheme.
