Vol. 407 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cork City Redundancies.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

21 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the estimated number of redundancies in Cork city in each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statistics of notified redundancies are not available in my Department in respect of Cork city as such statistics are recorded on a country basis only. The total numbers of redundancies notified in Country Cork in the last five years were: 1986, 2,397; 1987, 2,797; 1988, 2,796; 1989, 1,369; 1990, 1,863.

The 1989 and 1990 figures (average 1,616) represent a considerable drop on the figures for the year 1986, 1987 and 1988 (average 2,663).

It must be stressed that the figures given for the last five years relate to notifications of proposed redundancies under the Redundancy Payments Acts and not to actual redundancies. They do not, therefore, include certain categories of employees which do not come within the scope of the Redundancy Payments Acts.
