Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Reports on Oestrogen Treatment.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

155 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on recent published reports that oestrogen treatment, over a period of time, can bring about breast cancer.

I am aware of reports over the years, including recent reports, which suggest that oestrogen treatment over prolonged periods of time may bring about breast cancer.

As far back as 1977, the National Drugs Advisory Board published an information booklet on oestrogen-containing products which drew attention to the possible side effects of such products, including the possible relationship with breast cancers. The booklet also set out guidelines on the usage and prescribing of such products. Furthermore, product authorisations granted in respect of such preparations, contain statements setting out the possible risks and side effects and make appropriate recommendations with regard to usage and prescribing regimes.
