Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Hospital Study.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

162 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on a recent study carried out by the Department of Surgery and Pathology at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9, which found that almost a quarter of patients who underwent appendectomies in a Dublin teaching hospital were found to have normal appendices; and the steps he proposes to take to ensure that the situation is improved.

I have not, as yet, received a copy of the study referred to by the Deputy. When a copy is received, I will have it examined by my chief medical officer. However, I would like to remind the Deputy that the decision that a patient undergo surgery is a matter for the consultant concerned and I have no function in such clinical decisions.
