Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Extension of Gas Pipeline.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

39 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy if it is intended to extend the natural gas pipeline to County Kildare towns which have a potential for industrial expansion in the event of the availability of natural gas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bord Gáis Éireann have a statutory obligation to develop and maintain a system for the supply of natural gas on a commercial basis. Accordingly, proposals for the extension of the gas distribution grid are a matter for Bord Gáis Éireann and are assessed by the board in the light of that obligation.

With the exception of Leixlip, the board have been unable to identify sufficient industrial, commercial or residential development in towns in north Kildare which would justify the level of expenditure required for extension of the gas grid to this area.
I am advised by the board that the extension of the natural gas grid to Leixlip is under active consideration at this time. It is too soon to say, however, if such a proposal would be feasible.
