Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Energy Generation Sources.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

62 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Energy if it is legal for groups to set up hydro-electric schemes or schemes for the generation of energy form other sources; and, if so, if grants are available for such works.

I am not aware of any legal barriers for individuals or groups wishing to establish hydro-electric schemes or other schemes for the generation of electricity provided they comply with whatever statutory requirements are applicable e.g. planning Acts, safety at work legislation, the property rights of others etc., and in this regard I would strongly advise that interested parties consult their legal advisers before committing themselves to any major expenditure. There are no grants available from my Department for the establishment of hydro-electric schemes. However, promoters of certain hydro projects may be eligible to apply to the EC Commission for grants under the EC Thermie Programme.
