Vol. 407 No. 7

Written Answers. - Deaths in Garda or Prison Custody.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

78 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Justice the number of people who have died in Garda or prison custody in the past three years; and the place and cause of death in each case.

The number of persons who died in Garda or prison custody in the three year period 1 May 1988 to 30 April 1991 is 18. The place, date, and cause of death in each case is listed in the following table. The cause of death is as indicated in the coroner's verdict, in the report on the postmortem or in the register of deaths, as the case may be. A further death occured in Carlow Garda station early this morning. It is of course too soon to give any definitive indication of the cause of death in that case.
