The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of the previous year. In the case of Creevlea national school there were 26 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1990, which warrants a staff of principal only for the 1991-92 school year.
The only exceptions that can be made from the agreed arrangements are in the case of developing schools or where my Department's guidelines on maximum class sizes are being breached.
The school would not qualify as a developing school; however the question of a breach of maximum class size guidelines could be examined in September 1991. My Department recently announced new arrangements for a maximum class size of 28 for one-teacher schools with more than four standards.
