Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cabra (Dublin) School for the Deaf.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

206 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the serious situation which has arisen in St. Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra, Dublin 7 where the audiology equipment is now, in many cases, obsolete and needs to be replaced immediately with new equipment where parts are freely available to enable repairs to be carried out quickly; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that (1) despite the urgent need for expert counselling and careers guidance for the deaf students before they enter the job market, no teacher has been provided, even on a part time basis, (2) there is no PE teacher in this school, the provision of which would be of tremendous benefit to the pupils; if she will outline her proposals to rectify this situation; whether this school will be given a priority listing for the provision of equipment which is a necessity to the teaching of the deaf; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have arranged for my Department to conduct an assessment of the appropriateness of current resourcing arrangements in the two schools for deaf children in Cabra.

The issues raised by the Deputy will form part of this assessment.
