Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Citizen in British Custody.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

90 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the progress which has been made by his Department in the case of an Irish prisoner (details supplied) in Gartree Prison, England for referral to the appeal court; and if he will make representations to the British Home Office to agree to the prisoner's request for a linguistic test of his disputed confessions.

On my instructions the Irish Embassy at London have made further representations regarding the case of the citizen in question to the British police complaints authority and the British Home Office. The embassy has been advised that the case is still under active consideration and that a decision is expected shortly.

An officer of the embassy visited the citizen in question early last week and discussed his case with him. At that meeting the question of a syntax analysis of the statements which the citizen is said to have made arose for the first time. The embassy is investigating this issue with the Home Office.
