Ceist:80 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the VHI do not provide full cover for consultants' fees; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that fees charged by some consultants exceed the level of cover provided under VHI plans. However, the VHI for a considerable time have been actively engaged in negotiations with the consultants with a view to resolving this problem. As a result the VHI introduced their full cover system for professional fees from 1 March 1991. Consultants who participate in the scheme will receive increased payments from the VHI and in return will not charge additional amounts to patients. Substantial numbers of consultants have already agreed to participate in the new scheme and the numbers participating are expected to increase steadily.
