Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Egyptian Treatment of Christian Prisoners.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

113 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to concerns which have been expressed in relation to the treatment of Christian prisoners in Egypt; and whether Ireland has raised these concerns either bilaterally or through the EC.

I am aware of the reports which have come from Amnesty International and from other sources regarding the treatment of prisoners, both Muslim and Christian, in Egypt.

I have not raised these reports with the Egyptian authorities either bilaterally or in consulation with our EC partners. If the Deputy has a particular case in mind and can furnish the details I will ask our Embassy in Cairo to look into the matter.
